Long before he became known throughout the country as Bishop Ted, Teodoro Cruz Bacani Jr. was a young boy who eagerly looked forward to spending his summer vacations with his grandparents in Orion, Bataan.
Early Life & Orion Roots
Born on January 16, 1940, to Engineer Teodoro T. Bacani and Consolacion Hernandez Cruz, young Teodoro found happiness in the simple joys of provincial life. His days in Orion—particularly visiting his roots in Barangay Calungusan—were filled with meaningful moments shared with family and the local community. He especially enjoyed visiting the shore, where he gathered oysters and caught crabs—ordinary childhood adventures that became treasured memories and deepened his lifelong connection to the town.
A Moment of Providence in Camachile
One of those summer visits brought an experience he would never forget. While crossing a field in Barangay Camachile, Orion, he suddenly found himself dangerously close to a snake. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed. Had the encounter ended differently, Orion and the Philippine Church might never have come to know the priest, teacher, bishop, theologian, and public servant affectionately called Bishop Ted.
Priesthood & Academic Ministry
The young boy who once explored the fields and shores of Orion could not yet have imagined the remarkable journey that awaited him. As he grew older, his carefree summers gave way to a deeper desire to dedicate his life to God and His people.
He entered San Jose Seminary, where his vocation was nurtured through prayer, study, discipline, and discernment. On December 21, 1965, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Iba. During the early years of his priesthood, he served in various parish communities in Zambales, accompanying the faithful through moments of joy, sorrow, uncertainty, and hope.
His vocation eventually brought him into the ministry of priestly formation. Gifted with a keen intellect and a natural ability to teach, he became a professor of Theology at San Carlos Seminary and later served as its dean. For Bishop Ted, forming future priests required more than academic excellence-it called for humility, discipline, compassion, integrity, and a sincere willingness to serve.
Episcopal Ministry & Constitutional Commission
His years as a priest and formator prepared him for broader leadership. On March 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Manila and Titular Bishop of Gauriana, receiving his episcopal ordination on April 12 of the same year. As a bishop, he became widely respected for his deep understanding of theology, morality, and public affairs, as well as his ability to relate Church teachings to the daily lives of ordinary Filipinos.
His voice soon reached beyond churches and seminaries. In 1986, Bishop Bacani was appointed as a member of the Philippine Constitutional Commission. Together with his fellow commissioners, he participated in drafting the Constitution that was ratified by the Filipino people in 1987. Shaped by faith, moral principles, and respect for human dignity, his contributions became a landmark chapter in his public service during the restoration of the nation's democratic institutions.
Diocese of Novaliches & Continuing Legacy
Years later, Bishop Bacani was entrusted with another historic responsibility. On December 7, 2002, Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Novaliches and appointed him as its first bishop. He was formally installed on January 16, 2003—his 63rd birthday.
After guiding the newly established diocese through its foundational months, his resignation from pastoral governance was accepted on November 25, 2003, after which he became known as the Bishop Emeritus of Novaliches. Bishop Bacani later became affiliated with the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), adding the initials O.P. after his name.
As of 2026, Bishop Ted remains recognized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines as Bishop Emeritus of Novaliches. At 86 years old, he continues to participate in selected liturgical celebrations, conferences, and spiritual-formation activities. Notably, in August 2025, he served as a keynote speaker at a national conference on the ministry of spiritual direction.
From the quiet shores of Orion to parish communities, seminary classrooms, the episcopacy, and the halls where the nation’s Constitution was written, the life and ministry of Most Rev.
