Ministry of Altar Servers

Overview

The Ministry of Altar Servers is a ministry of young men of St. Michael the Archangel Parish who are called and commissioned to assist the Priest at the altar during the Holy Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Its members serve as vested participants and prayer leaders before the congregation, and are formed not only in the rubrics of the liturgy but also in prayer, discipline, fellowship, and Christian character.

Organization

The ministry is a subordinate of the Worship Ministry and is directly under the Parish Priest. It is guided by an Adviser — a former member equipped with knowledge and experience from having served at the altar — and is governed by its Officers. It follows the norms and guidelines set by Universal Law, both Canonical and Liturgical, and by the Diocesan Ministry for Liturgical Affairs of the Diocese of Balanga.

Membership and Ranks

Membership follows a progression of three ranks:

1. Novice – Begins by shadowing experienced servers and wears a polo with the prescribed proper attire.
2. Server – After further experience, performs standard duties independently and wears a long sleeve or gala.
3. Senior Server – Knows the rubrics deeply, acts as cross-bearer and mentor, and wears the cassock and surplice.

Each promotion is marked by a formal Investiture, with a minimum of three to six months of active service in a rank before advancement.

A Seedbed of Vocations

Beyond liturgical service, the ministry serves as a seedbed of vocations. Many who serve at the altar in their youth are led, through that service, to a deeper love for the Eucharist and to a lasting commitment to the Church, whether as priests, religious, consecrated lay faithful, or as committed lay leaders of the parish.

Vision

We envision the Ministry of Altar Servers of St. Michael the Archangel Parish as a community of young men who are reverent at the altar and faithful in life: servers who know and love the liturgy, who grow in holiness through the Eucharist, and who become tomorrow's priests, religious, and servant-leaders of the Church and of their families.

Mission

As a ministry, we commit ourselves to:

1. Serve God and His Church with reverence, discipline, and joy at every Holy Mass and liturgical celebration entrusted to us
2. Form young men as responsible stewards of the liturgy through continuing liturgical, doctrinal, and spiritual formation
3. Grow in personal holiness through the Eucharist, frequent confession, and a life of prayer
4. Foster fellowship, humility, and unity among the servers, caring for one another as brothers in service
5. Give witness to Christ by living a morally upright life inside and outside the parish
6. Promote awareness of and openness to the call to the priesthood, religious life, and consecrated lay vocations
